ABOUT THE CASE STUDY

Placement experience

Students undertaking placements with MCS are embedded within project teams and exposed to the day-to-day realities of a project. This includes working collaboratively across departments, supporting project delivery, and developing core skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and technical understanding.

The structure of the placement ensures that students can apply knowledge from their course in a practical setting, while gaining insight into how engineering and construction projects are delivered from start to finish.

Partnership with Education Providers

MCS has built strong, ongoing relationships with education partners, including London Design & Engineering UTC. This partnership is centred on providing high-quality, meaningful placements aligned with industry expectations.

The stories behind the numbers – Janice Tricks,

Careers and Employer Engagement Lead

“We are incredibly grateful to Lucie Woollams and the team at MCS for their ongoing support of our learners at London Design & Engineering UTC. Over the past three years, MCS have consistently demonstrated a genuine commitment to providing high-quality T Level placement opportunities, helping our learners gain invaluable real-world experience.

Lucie and her team have built a fantastic relationship with the college, and their enthusiasm and willingness to engage has made a significant impact. They recognise the potential in our young people and actively contribute to their development, ensuring placements are meaningful and aligned with industry expectations.

Their support has already led to successful progression outcomes, including a learner securing an apprenticeship and being nominated for an award, a true testament to the opportunities and guidance provided through their placements.

MCS continue to go above and beyond to strengthen collaboration, including offering teacher work experience opportunities to further enhance the student journey. We truly value their partnership and look forward to continuing this positive relationship in the years ahead.”

Student insight –

Anas, Student

“ I was drawn to the placement opportunity at MCS because it gave me the chance to gain real industry experience alongside my studies and develop practical skills within a professional environment. I wanted to better understand how the knowledge from my course is applied within the engineering and construction industry, while also learning from experienced professionals.

During my time at MCS, I worked with a range of different people and teams which helped me understand how projects are delivered collaboratively. The structure of the placement allowed me to be involved in a variety of tasks and responsibilities that linked closely to my course, particularly around communication, technical understanding, teamwork and problem solving. It gave me valuable insight into the day-to-day workings of the industry and helped build both my confidence and professional experience.

Receiving an apprenticeship offer following my placement was a really positive outcome for me, as it showed the progress I had made and reinforced my interest in continuing within the industry. I also feel proud to have been selected as a finalist for the Enginuity award, as it is great recognition for the effort and development achieved throughout my placement experience. ”

MCS also supports wider education engagement through initiatives such as teacher work experience.

Outcomes and impact key outcomes include:

  • Progression into apprenticeship roles
  • Recognition through award nominations
  • Increased confidence and employability skills
  • Stronger partnerships with education providers

Long ahead
