ABOUT THE CASE STUDY

Breaking Barriers: Inspiring Young Minds in the Construction Industry

During National Careers Week and Women in Construction Week 2024, we were able to reflect on the power of early engagement in shaping young minds and challenging stereotypes. At MCS, we embarked on a journey to inspire primary school students and ignite their curiosity about the construction industry. Join us as we explore the impact of our initiative and the importance of breaking barriers at a young age.

In our sessions with students from St Joseph and St Teresa’s Catholic School in Wells, and Cotford St Luke Primary School in Taunton, we didn’t just talk about careers; we brought them to life. From exploring stereotypes to delving into sustainability, every activity was designed to spark imagination and foster critical thinking.

One of the highlights was our engaging group activity on bridge building, where we seamlessly integrated engineering concepts into the school curriculum. Witnessing the excitement and curiosity in the students’ eyes reaffirmed the impact of our efforts. By challenging stereotypes and showcasing diverse career paths, we planted seeds for future exploration and innovation.

While the day was filled with laughter, learning, and invaluable insights, we couldn’t help but reflect on the broader challenges. The lack of feedback and the underestimation of primary school engagement by some businesses remain hurdles to overcome. However, we believe that engaging young minds is vital in shaping a more inclusive and dynamic workforce.

Nick Prinn, Year 6 Lead at Cotford St Luke Primary School

"THANK YOU SO MUCH for visiting Cotford over the last two days. The children I’ve chatted to have loved the bridge building and it has hopefully sparked some interest in the children about a career in construction. I did see some children playing with lego at lunch time today and they were trying to build a bridge to support a heavy book!!

I really appreciate you tailoring each session for the class - it is no easy feat to work with R to Y6 and yu did it effortlessly.

Thank you so much for your time - you have really made a great impact in helping us challenge stereotypes in careers”.
